Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about cosmetic injections.

We only use brand-name cosmetic injections, your choice of Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, and Nuceiva. Cosmetic injections block signals from the nerves, which weakens the muscle’s contraction. The weakened muscle can’t contract as much and in turn your wrinkles will lessen for 2-4 months, depending on the dose. Due to its ability to quickly, safely, and effectively reduce unwanted expression lines, wrinkle-reducing cosmetic injections are now the most popular cosmetic treatments in North America, after first receiving FDA approval for cosmetic indications in 1989.

Botox, Dysport, and Nuceiva are all brand name wrinkle-reducing cosmetic injections with similar effects and duration. Botox is the most commonly known brand and is often more expensive; while Dysport and Nucieva work just as well and can save you money. Botox is $2 more per unit. Many of our patients ask for Dysport or Nuceiva and prefer the alternatives to Botox.

Some practitioners say they inject an average of 10 to 30 units into the forehead. Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox Cosmetic, suggests a dosage of 4 units each in five sites on the forehead, totalling 20 units. Your practitioner may start out with a low-unit dosage in each injection at first.

Other parts of the face or neck will have to be decided individually – however, this is a general idea.

A cosmetic treatment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. This includes a mandatory consultation, the injections only take 15-25 minutes.

It generally takes three to seven days to see the full effect, and it is best to avoid cardio or strenuous exercise for 18-24 hours after your session.

Temporary bruising is the most common side effect of cosmetic injections. A small percentage of patients may develop temporary eyelid drooping. This usually ends within three weeks. Drooping usually happens when the injection moves around, so it’s best not to rub the treated area for twelve (12) hours after injection or lie down for three (3) hours. If there is an area with bruising, we can use laser treatments to reduce the effects.

The effects of cosmetic injections will last two (2) to four (4) months. As muscle strength gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear and need to be treated again. After receiving the treatment multiple times, the lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.

We inject with a fine needle into specific muscles, or just below the surface of the skin, with only minor discomfort. Some people say they don’t feel most of the injection points.
